Let It Grow
On my way home from a bike ride, I was stopped at a crosswalk, so I started to look around.
Next to me, I saw a woman planting in a little patch next to the road, so I decided to start a quick conversation.
Her name was Kathie, and planting with her was her husband Steve.
She’d lived in DC since 1989, and her husband used to be a press secretary.
Kathie told me that she had earned the title of “master gardener”, and that she had a huge passion for it.
Her mother was also a terrific planter, Kathie having started in 2017.
What brings her joy?
Helping the environment in this way was a big source of her joy, she said.
The statistic she gave me was that 40% of vital insects had been lost because of damage to the environment and a lack of enough plants, so she was determined to make a difference.
She mentioned an affiliation with the Environment Protection Agency, and I could see that she and her husband were both very dedicated to the cause.
I found it amazing to see them working so hard to help their community, and I felt inspired to look out for the world around me as well.
Many people say that their source of joy comes from nature, but Kathie was a reminder that we must preserve that nature first.
