Loved Ones
Jim was sitting at a table enjoying the sun, so I thought I’d sit next to him and introduce myself.
He told me he was waiting for his son and grandson, who were at the dentist's office next door.
He joked that it was apparently too small for all of them to fit in, but he wasn’t complaining because he got to relax outside for a while.
Jim was from Cleveland, Ohio, and he’d majored in engineering at West Point when he was younger.
After college, Jim went on to serve in the military for 22 years, spending 4 of those years in Hawaii with his family.
In Hawaii, their family tradition was watching the NFL games in the morning because of the time difference, followed by time at the beach.
Jim also brought up the “moonbows” (rainbows by the moon) that could be seen there, which I found hard to believe.
What brings him joy?
Bringing the conversation back to the present day, Jim told me that he wasn’t actually from DC and was just visiting family.
That was his source of joy: Jim loved spending time with his family, especially his three grandsons.
He mentioned his brother too, who had also worked as an engineer and was retired.
Even if it meant waiting outside the dentist's office for a little bit, Jim loved the time they all shared together, and I totally agreed with him.
