Read With A Smile
I was on my way home from grabbing some lunch at a sandwich place near my house, and as I headed back to my car there were a few people sitting at a bus stop.
The bus hadn’t shown up yet, so I figured I’d help someone pass the time, and I introduced myself to a woman named Daphne.
She was headed to a book club, and ironically, the book they were reading was “The Power Of Strangers”.
Daphne works at AU with their school materials department, so she gets to see all different levels of students, from the nervous freshman to the graduating seniors.
She likes that it reminds her of when she was in college, and it’s cool to see the students go through the same process.
Daphne was born and raised here in DC, and most of her family is here as well.
In her free time, she likes to listen to music, and she admitted that she hopes to eventually take up some piano lessons.
Daphne used to play piano as a kid, but she hated it back then; however, she thinks it would be a great hobby to pick back up.
What brings her joy?
There was a reason why she was headed to that book club: reading brings Daphne joy.
It’s the simple act of learning something new that brings her joy, which is why she likes her job’s university setting.
Daphne explained that reading can give people a greater understanding of topics that they otherwise wouldn’t know about.
For instance, she recently read “Read Dangerously”, which taught her about the importance of various types of literature and the impact they can have in hard times.
She’s been going to book club meetings for 10 years now, and it’s clear that she’s not planning on stopping!
