Friends Are The Best
I’d just gotten lunch with my grandmother in Georgetown, so it felt like the right time to go for a walk.
As I got all the way to the Potomac River, I noticed someone sitting right on the edge of the river and I thought I’d start a conversation.
She introduced herself as Phoebe, telling me that this walk along the river was a nice way to relax.
Phoebe had grown up not very far from there in Arlington, and she’d gone to undergrad at JMU.
A part of Phoebe's story that I found especially cool was that she was adopted from China and that her sister was also adopted into their family.
Phoebe told me her sister was actually working with the Peace Corps in Morocco at the moment, and that her family was going to go visit her, which sounded exciting.
Phoebe currently works as an ICU nurse in DC, and she told me that, with Covid still present, it has come with a number of challenges.
What brings her joy?
Although working as a nurse has difficulties, it also allows her to have the source of joy she mentioned, which was spending time with friends.
Whether it is her friends from work or even those from school, spending time with them brings her a smile. Even just seeing them happy, she said, makes her happy.
Talking about school friends, she said that it’s cool to see her friends grow as people and it made me think about how my friends will grow up in that way.
Either way, Phoebe made it realize that no matter where they are in life, friends can always bring joy.
